Punta Espinosa, Fernandina
Punta Espinosa, located on the northeastern tip of Fernandina Island, is widely considered one of the most pristine and visually striking visitor sites in the Galápagos archipelago. As the only visitor point on the youngest and most volcanically active island in the chain, it offers a raw, "prehistoric" landscape dominated by the looming La Cumbre volcano.
The site is a narrow spit of land formed by lava flows and sand, characterized by its stark, jet-black volcanic rock.
Lava Formations: Visitors can observe both Pahoehoe (smooth, rope-like) and 'A'a (jagged, sharp) lava flows, providing a clear window into the island's ongoing geological evolution.
Tidal Pools: The rocky shoreline is dotted with shallow pools that frequently trap marine life like sea turtles, rays, and small fish during low tide.
Mangrove Forests: Patches of red, white, and black mangroves fringe the coast, offering a burst of green against the dark volcanic backdrop and serving as a nursery for various species.
Espinosa Point is world-famous for its high concentration of endemic species that have never been threatened by introduced mammals like rats or goats.
Marine Iguana Colonies: This site hosts one of the largest colonies of marine iguanas in the world. They are often seen in massive, dark piles on the lava rocks, blending in perfectly until they move or snort salt from their specialized glands.
Flightless Cormorants: This is a premier spot to see the endemic flightless cormorant. Visitors can watch them drying their stunted wings on the rocks or diving into the nutrient-rich waters to hunt.
Galápagos Penguins: Small groups of these rare tropical penguins are frequently spotted perched along the shoreline or swimming in the cool, upwelling waters of the Cromwell Current.
Predators and Reptiles: Galápagos hawks often circle above looking for prey, while the endemic Galápagos racer snake can sometimes be seen near iguana nesting sites.
