Darwin Bay, Genovesa Island.

Great Darwin Bay, located on the northern shore of Genovesa Island, is a spectacular visitor site formed within the submerged caldera of an ancient shield volcano. It is frequently referred to as "Bird Island" due to the incredibly high density of seabirds that nest in its cliffs and surrounding forests.

The site is defined by its dramatic volcanic landscape and calm, protected waters:

  • Diverse Habitats: The bay features a crescent-shaped white coral sand beach, arid lava trails, and lush mangrove forests, creating a variety of niches for endemic species.

  • Abundant Wildlife: It is a premier destination for birdwatchers, offering close-up encounters with Great Frigatebirds, Red-footed Boobies, Swallow-tailed Gulls, and Darwin's finches.

  • Water-Based Exploration: The sheltered waters within the caldera are ideal for kayaking, snorkeling, and panga rides, allowing visitors to spot sea lions, sharks, and rays in the deep, blue waters.
